Leicester’s libraries and community centres are vital resources for our city’s residents.
But now, Labour’s proposed cuts threaten to close or drastically reduce services at key facilities. These community hubs are places where children can learn, families can connect, and vulnerable residents can access essential services. Without them, Leicester will lose critical spaces that bring our communities together.
The Threat:
The Labour-run council has announced plans to close or cut services at:
Libraries:
Evington Library – Evington Ward
Knighton Library – Knighton Ward
Rushey Mead Library – Rushey Mead Ward
St Matthews Library – Wycliffe Ward
Community Centres:
Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre – Belgrave Ward
Braunstone Frith Recreation Centre – Western Ward
Coleman Neighbourhood Centre – Evington Ward
Eyres Monsell Community Centre – Eyres Monsell Ward
Gilmorton Rooms – Aylestone Ward
Netherhall Neighbourhood Centre – Humberstone & Hamilton Ward
Rushey Mead Recreation Centre – Rushey Mead Ward
Tudor Centre – Abbey Ward
Several libraries will also face reduced opening hours, making it harder for residents to access services, resources, and support.
These proposed cuts are not just about closing buildings. They represent the loss of access to education, recreational activities, support for job seekers, and safe spaces for families. Vulnerable residents, including the elderly, low-income families, and young people, will be hit the hardest.
What We’re Doing:
We are launching a campaign to protect these vital spaces and stop Labour’s cuts. We believe that our libraries and community centres are essential, and we are fighting to keep them open and fully funded. But we need your help.
Here’s how you can get involved:
Complete the Consultation
The council’s consultation on these proposed cuts is open until 29 June. Every response counts, and we need as many people as possible to participate and share their thoughts. Your feedback could help protect these vital services for all.
Sign the Petition
We’ve launched a petition calling for the protection of our libraries and community centres. Add your name to show that you believe these spaces should remain open and fully funded for everyone in our community.
Spread the Word
Share this campaign with your friends, family, and neighbours. Encourage them to take action and make their voices heard. The more people who get involved, the stronger our case for saving these spaces.
We won’t let these services be cut without a fight. Your local Conservative Councillors, and local Conservative campaigners are standing up for our communities and calling for Labour to rethink its decisions. Together, we can protect these vital community spaces for future generations.
