Edward Yi He has been given the challenge of trying to overturn Mr Vaz's huge 18,352 majority in Leicester East.
The 31-year-old Chinese-born candidate is an aerospace advanced manufacturing engineer who lives on the edge of the constituency near Abbey Park.
He moved to Leicester in 2013 having worked for Tata Steel in South Wales where he took on another high-profile Labour figure, Stephen Kinnock, in the 2015 General Election.
Mr He acknowledged the challenge Mr Vaz posed but added: "He has been an MP for nearly 30 years and he has taken the people of Leicester East for granted. Now, I think, people are ready for a change."
Mr He is a trustee at a cancer support charity and has worked in city schools as a STEM ambassador.
He said his priorities include supporting the Prime Minister Theresa May's plan for Brexit and working to get more affordable and decent housing provision in Leicester East.
