This week, thousands of residents across Leicester will receive letters informing them of the devastating impact Labour councillors' cuts will have on their support. The reduction in Council Tax Support (CTS) will leave many of the city’s most vulnerable residents struggling to make ends meet, drastically reducing their support due to Labour's actions.
All Conservative councillors stood with the public and voted against these cuts, fighting to protect those most in need. Despite these efforts, the following councillors voted in favour of the cuts:
- Abbey ward: Councillor Agath
- Thurncourt ward: Councillor Aldred
- Braunstone Park and Rowley Fields ward: Councillor Barton, Councillor Halford, Councillor Singh Johal
- Evington ward: Councillor Bajaj
- Spinney Hills ward: Councillor Batool, Councillor Malik
- Humberstone & Hamilton ward: Councillor Bonham, Councillor Kaur Saini, Councillor Joel
- Saffron ward: Councillor Cassidy, Councillor Cutkelvin
- Westcotes ward: Councillor Clarke, Councillor Russell
- Western ward: Councillor Cole, Councillor O’Neill, Councillor Dempster
- Stoneygate ward: Councillor Mohammed, Councillor Sood, Councillor Surti
- Eyres Monsell ward: Councillor Pantling, Councillor Pickering
- Troon ward: Councillor Singh Sangha
- Knighton ward: Councillor Moore, Councillor Whittle
- Fosse ward: Councillor Zaman, Councillor Waddington
In addition to the Council Tax Support cuts, both the national Labour government under Keir Starmer and the local Labour administration in Leicester have implemented policies that have worsened the financial strain on vulnerable populations. One significant example is the abolition of the winter fuel payment for all but the poorest pensioners, leaving many without vital financial support during the colder months. Despite promising no Council Tax increases, Labour's Leicester administration has announced a 4.99% rise, adding to the growing discontent among residents.
Leicester Conservatives are committed to reversing these harmful cuts and restoring full Council Tax Support to protect the city’s most vulnerable. We will continue to fight for fair and effective policies that support those in need, and we pledge to make these changes a priority if elected to lead the council in future elections. Labour's broken promises are putting unnecessary financial strain on hard-working families and vulnerable individuals across Leicester.
